The Top Division was reduced to 20 clubs.

Manchester United become the first club to complete the FA Cup and League Championship double a second time, emulating their feat of 1994. Their 9th FA Cup win set a new record. They become the sixth club to reach three successive FA Cup finals. This was a repeat of the 1977 final.

Aston Villa won the League Cup for the 5th time, equalling the record set by Liverpool in the previous season.

Manchester City were relegated on goal difference.
