History

Three points for a win was introduced.

Liverpool won the Championship for the 13th time. They also retained the League Cup.

Aston Villa won the European Cup keeping the trophy in England for the 6th consecutive year.

Tottenham Hotspur won the FA Cup for a record equalling 7th time from seven final appearances. They became the first club to reach both domestic cup finals in the same season. They became the first club since 1962 to win the FA Cup in successive seasons. Queens Park Rangers were the 18th second level club to reach the final. This was the fourth all-London final.

Swansea City (making their top division debut), as a Welsh club, could not qualify for the UEFA Cup in the English League. Their place was taken by Southampton. They qualified for the Cup Winners' Cup by winning the Welsh Cup.
