Manchester United won the Championship by 11 points equalling the record set in 1889. They became the first English club to enter the European Cup.
Birmingham City became the first club to reach the FA Cup final without playing at home.
Birmingham City were invited to participate in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (later to become the Fairs Cup then the UEFA Cup). This irregular tournament was for clubs from certain cities.
The first floodlit matches in the League and FA Cup were played. The first floodlit competitive match was between Portsmouth and
