History

Oldham Athletic ended their season with two home matches needing two points to win the Championship. They lost both.

Bradford Park Avenue made their first appearance in the top division. The original club would be liquidated in 1974.

At the end of the season it was decided that the top division would be expanded to 22 clubs. Instead of keeping the two clubs that finished bottom, a vote was taken. Woolwich Arsenal, who finished 5th in the second level, gained promotion to the top division at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur who were relegated. Woolwich Arsenal then moved to North London (dropping the Woolwich in their name) to become local rivals for Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea were relegated but voted back in.

The FA Cup final was played at Old Trafford in Manchester.
