USA and Bulgaria
The National Endowment of Democracy (NED - a USA organisation that funds
American foreign policy objectives) pours $1,500,000 into the election campaign and selected newspapers in Bulgaria in an attempt
to cause the defeat of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP). The
BSP wins the election.
The USA backs opposition forces to destabilise the new government which is forced eventually to resign. A year later, after the
NED injects more money into the election, a government acceptable to the USA is elected.
